Male enhancement supplement recalled due to undeclared erectile dysfunction drug

Almost everything in this story sounds like a joke, but we assure you it is not. And that’s important because it’s an undeclared drug. A company called Stiff Boy LLC (again, we’re not kidding) is voluntary recall of all batches of a capsule he sells himself called The beast, a food supplement marketed for “the improvement of men”.

So why is the Beast being called back? Because FDA testing has shown the supplement to be tainted with the drug sildenafil, which treats erectile dysfunction and is the active ingredient in the brand name drug Viagra.

“We believe The Beast will save relationships in bedrooms across the country, regardless of age,” Stiff Boy LLC claims products on its website, Which one is youcanbeabeast.com. “You will see and feel a difference the first day you try our product. Your wife, girlfriend or partner will ask you what it took to get the Beast in you out of the cage.”

But a company’s claims about a dietary supplement are not subject to FDA review. So if a supplement actually contains a drug, even a drug that (in this case) could make the pill work as marketed, the FDA considers it an unapproved drug that could pose safety concerns.

Sildenafil belongs to a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-5), which may interact negatively with drugs containing nitrates.

“Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates and may be the population most likely to be affected,” Stiff Boy LLC said in its recall announcement.

However, the company said it had not received any reports of consumers having “adverse events” related to the recall as of May 6.

Stiff Boy LLC asks consumers who have The Beast to “stop using it immediately and return to the place of purchase”,
